CERTIFICATION PROGRAM HELPS ID THEFT PROS STEM THE TIDE OF BUSINESS FAILURE AND CONSUMER VICTIMIZATION DUE TO ID THEFT IGNORANCE
DENVER, Colorado — Knowledge is power, and in the case of identity theft, the fastest-growing crime in the country, knowledge can prevent businesses from going under due to stolen information and the threat of customer lawsuits. The Privacy Trust Group has developed the first ID Theft Professionals Certification Program, which is intended to raise the standard of excellence for identity theft professionals, lawyers in related practices, corporate information managers and risk management professionals.
“There’s a need for more understanding about ID theft,” says Privacy Trust Group President R.M. Tracy. “Even some of the organizations and professionals most involved with identity and/or information theft don’t understand all of the risks, costs and difficulties of the ID theft recovery process, not to mention the keys to more effective marketing in the present environment of consumer concern about identity theft.”
Privacy Trust Group’s new Identity Theft Professionals Certification Program, “Certified ID Theft Professional (CIDTP),” consists of three classes:
- Corporate ID Theft Liability Seminar: explains the keys to streamline the process of identifying and correcting information security and privacy weaknesses.
- The Identity Theft Recovery Process: teaches ID theft professionals, credit repair lawyers and others the basics of the identity theft repair process.
- Identity Theft Corporate and Consumer Issues: teaches application of corporate information protection best practices, auditing and policy development, the changing direction of the laws from privacy to identity theft legislation and marketing in the changing and competitive business and legal environment.
Knowledge may be power, but a lack of knowledge is limiting some ID theft professionals’ success, according to Tracy. “They know the statistics and use scare tactics to sell their protection services,” she says. “If they understood all of what their products/services protect consumers from, and had a better understanding of corporate information protection needs and the direction of the identity theft protection and recovery industry, they would be better able to verbalize the true value of their offering.”
Prepaid legal associates and business owners who provide related identity theft protection products who have attended these seminars leave better prepared to succeed in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
"Our company provides an Identity theft product for individuals and as an employee benefit,” says Cheryl Blum Garcia, Pre-Paid Legal Associate and President of Blumcia Business Solutions, Inc. “After taking the Privacy Trust Group's class, my knowledge of identity theft regarding individuals and companies increased by 50 percent. The knowledge has provided me with greater value added for my customers and my company in the form of education programs that translate directly into increased sales. (R.M. Tracy)'s background and experience was very valuable in providing examples of identity theft and recommendations on reducing the risk. I would recommend this class to business owners, Human Resource professionals, insurance professionals, and professionals working with identity theft services."
According to the consumer advocate group Privacy Rights International, in the past two years, over 300 companies have had major information security breaches, potentially putting more than one-third of all Americans at risk of identity theft. “With the extensive media coverage of each major breach,” Tracy says, “consumers are starting to understand that companies aren’t protecting them as they should. Consumers are starting to sue companies that put them at risk of ID theft. Our Certification Program not only raises awareness and protects participating businesses, but helps ID theft professionals, related law practices and risk managers do their jobs better, and even grow their business potential by positioning themselves as experts in consumer information protection. That is priceless in today’s competitive business climate.”
